Amazon Grants Help Create Affordable Homes Near DC Area Transit

New grants from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and Amazon are making several housing projects near transit stations more affordable.

New grants from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and Amazon are making several housing projects near transit stations more affordable.

More than $656,000 will be distributed among 10 housing projects. The grants come from the new Housing Affordability Planning Program.

“We are delighted that these 10 projects are moving forward. We have high hopes as this is the inaugural year of the program,” COG President Christian Dorsey said at a June 8 board meeting. “We don’t know yet what the results will be. But given the rigor with which the committee and the technical panel analyze them, I hope they will produce excellent results.

The Council of Governments (COG) decides where the money goes, but the money comes from the $2 billion Amazon Housing Equity Fund.

“Given the highly competitive nature of this program, all (the projects) met the criteria of being in a regional center of activity, in or near an equity zone and near transportation stations in high-capacity common,” said Hilary Chapman, COG’s housing program manager.

The eight home developments and two studies were awarded up to $75,000.

Projects Receiving Inaugural Housing Affordability Planning Program Grants

“The Amazon Housing Equity Fund is thrilled to work with regional partners, like COG, to increase the supply of affordable housing in our region, especially near public transportation,” said Catherine Buell, director of the ‘Amazon Housing Equity Fund in a statement. “The 10 proposals announced today address many of our top priorities – advancing equity, expanding access to jobs and opportunity, and creating more vibrant and sustainable communities.”

COG will distribute the funds to the projects later this summer.
