Electric buses are becoming the new means of public transport

Novabus in Plattsburgh has built a new all-electric transit bus. “This is something that nobody has done before. Nobody has delivered a mass-produced all-electric vehicle,” said Justin Besaw, customer delivery coordinator for Novabus. Novabus is preparing to ship its electric transit bus from its Plattsburgh plant to Milwaukee next week. The all-electric bus is a new addition to the manufacturer’s lineup. Novabus already produces clean diesel buses and hybrid buses, which are partly diesel and partly electric. During this time, we won’t see many diesel buses on the roads anymore,” said Christos Kritsidimas, Head of Legal and Public Affairs at Novabus. Electric buses and hybrid buses are already helping cities reduce their emissions. Novabus electric buses last around 24 years, almost twice the national average for electric buses. According to Novabus, most diesel buses are retired between 12 and 20 years. Thus, they say the switch to electric and hybrid helps longevity as well as the environment. Besaw says electric vehicles are only one piece of the puzzle, but they are an important piece. “As we move forward and generations start to appear, Gen Z obviously, my generation of millennials, we start to look more at the planet, renewable resources and clean energy, and that’s a big part of that,” Besaw said. According to Novabus, electric or not, one full transit bus is equivalent to eliminating emissions from about 50 personal vehicles. They say hybrid options are a great alternative for transit agencies that may not be ready to go all-electric, but they say there’s another benefit to making the switch. a wrench, you won’t have any oil spills, and it won’t get dirty. It will be a clean environment, but a lot more electric, a lot more computerized,” Kritsidimas said. When transit agencies buy a fully electric bus, Novabus will show them how to maintain it. The company hopes more agencies will transit operators will get on board and say they’re thrilled with the clean energy transition across the country.

The company has begun phasing out diesel altogether as many cities shift to all-electric public transport.

“It will take time. But within 12 years we won’t see many diesel buses on the roads,” said Christos Kritsidimas, head of legal and public affairs at Novabus.
